What is ICSI?
ICSI or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is an assisted reproductive technology procedure used in cases of male infertility. It includes injecting a single sperm directly into an egg to facilitate fertilization in vitro (outside the body).
Process Overview of ICSI:
Sperm Retrieval:
Sperm is collected and stored from the male partner through ejaculation or directly from the testicles in cases of low sperm count or quality.
Egg Retrieval:
The female partner undergoes ovarian stimulation to produce eggs, which are then extracted and stored through a minor surgical procedure known as follicular aspiration.
Fertilization:
In the laboratory, a skilled embryologist selects a healthy-looking sperm and injects it directly into the egg using a specialized micromanipulation technique.
Embryo Culture:
Fertilized eggs (embryos) are cultured in a controlled environment for several days until they develop into viable embryos.
Embryo Transfer:
The best-quality embryos are selected and transferred into the woman's uterus, typically 3-5 days after fertilization, to establish pregnancy.
